Question Help me pick my next truck (Diesel)

My Lightning will finally be paid off in a few months and I really want to get a diesel truck when it is. I want a diesel primarily for it's functionality. I'll be able to tow my truck and also haul/tow anything that may come along. I don't really know a lot about todays diesel trucks so I was hoping some of you could help me. I'm not set on one specific make so Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet are all on the table. I'd like to hear pro's and con's for each make and which you all think would be the better buy. I'm not looking for a dually, just a 2500 model.

Cool

if you are dead set on getting a diesel i would look around for an older ford with a 7.3L in it otherwise i would go with a cummins

now if you are willing to wait and save for a year or 2 ford is coming out with a new diesel that is all in house no help from Internation because ford is cutting ties with them after the crappy job they did with the 6.0L and 6.4L powerstrokes.

and all of this is coming from a diehard ford fanatic

The 6.4 is fine, I'm a dealer tech. and the 6.4's perform quite well. Fuel economy is an issue but thats true with all the new DPF equipped trucks, including Chevy and Dodge. If you want the best all around get the Ford, if you want the best motor, get the dodge (although the drivetrain sucks) and if you want a pile of **** get the Chevy.

I'd go for the 6.4 if I was buying. If you're looking to hot rod it you can add a few basic modifications and be just under 600hp.

Not sure what to recommend. I personally drive a f250 with a 7.3L and cant be happier. I didnt like having to buy and older pickup just to get a more reliable engine but I did. Bought mine with 80k on it and now have around 180k on it and dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. It a 4x4 crewcab with 37'' tires and with the edge programmer I can get over 16mpg on the hiway. It pulls great. I would NEVER buy a 6.0L. The 6.4L are overpriced. As for the dodge my buddy has 08 model and it gets about 11-12 mpg. He cant wait to get rid of it. The 24V are not bad and with a chip are COMPLETE animals. But again not much on milage. Dont know much and havnt heard much on the duramaxs.

This is not close to true. The "Allison" behind the Duramax is not a "True" Allison like behind the F650's and such.
It will take a few thousand to get a "Allison" behind a Duramax to hold a Duramax with just a programmer, intake and exhaust.
The Ford tranny, Torqueshift, has been proven to hold upwards of 500 RWHP in stock mode, some are pushing close to 700 on the bottle that have had stock tranny's, some are not lasting some are. A Chevy tranny would not be able to get even close to 500 RWHP without problems.
Now I am/used to be a die hard GM guy until GM would not deal with me on a truck when I bought my 2004 F350 SRW FX4. Great truck and never really had a problem with it. Chevy would not come off of sticker.
2 years ago in May I got rid of the F350 and got a 2008 F450 4x4, GREAT TRUCK. This truck stock has as much power towing my trailer as the F350 did with a tow tune. It is way more stable than a SRW, which they all would be. Tried Chevy again for a Dually, sticker price.
For a decision like this it will depend on what you will be using the truck for:
If like me, I really only use my truck to tow my car on a trailer or our fifth wheel. Then buy a Ford.
If you are going to be using the truck to be a grocery getter, lady driving it, etc. a Chevy is way more car like and rid better. A Ford will be about 750-1000# heavier than a comparable Chevy. A Ford you feel like you are driving a truck and not a car. When I drive my friends Chevy's, they are nice, but I feel like I am driving my wifes Tahoe. A Chevy front end is independent front suspension, so it will ride nicer, but have been known to break.

They've pretty much worked the "bugs" out now.

The Allison behind the Chevy Pickups is THE FIRST THING to go out/bad when you add performance mods to it!
