View Full Version : Plug Gap question for 100 shot

Hey guys, when I up'd to the 100 jets I ordered HT0 plugs to replace the HT1's. For those who don't know, the 05 and up Mustangs use a special plug with a wrap around electrode ($100 a set:fuyou_2:). Just curious if I should stick with the factory gap or shorten it a tad?
Oh yea, I forgot to mention the $30 plug specific gapping tool!:sad1:

Shorten it. What is the factory gap?

.045. I have sprayed it a few times on the HT1's, but have not pulled them yet as the new ones haven't showed up yet. Wideband A/F is good though.

You will probably be fine at .045" with 100 shot but if you want to play it safe or run a bigger shot reduce it to .035".

just curious, why get 100$ set of plugs when a 20$ set of autolites will do the same thing? whats so special about these?

Actually these are Autolites! LOL...
It is a completely new design that is specific to the 3 Valve modulars and no other plug will work. A Ford better idea.:dunno:
I'll see if I can find a pic to post.
Ok, here's one.

 WOW! That's some spark-plug!

I've heard those have a tendency to sieze up in the head, so definately put some anti-sieze on them. I bought the 9/16" plug socket for those bastids off the tool truck a few months ago, but havn't needed to use it yet.

Yea, had to buy the special socket for them that allows you to get way down in the recess of the head to get them out and the gap tool awhile back. They are "supposedly" a 100k mile plug.

I tell you, those engineers at Ford have to have some of the best drugs out there to come up with these ideas, lol.
sorry but, 100$ spark plugs are just another reason I am a GM guy.

Are these plugs platinum or iridium? You scared me when you said 100K plugs. You don't want to run long life(self cleaning) plugs with nitrous.
They run a lot hotter than a standard plug and are prone to detonation. Try to find a copper plug in that design. They wont last 100k but your motor will.
Cheers,
John

I agree with you jjvette, but I do not know the differance between fords HT0 plugs and the HT1's. the way he made it sound he got 1-step colder from factory.
EDIT: oh, I think HT is Heat Tempurature. if that is the case then he did get 1-step colder.

That's correct. They are 1 step colder and at the moment, the HT1 anf HT0 are the ONLY ones available and only from Autolite. No other manufacturer has these style plugs available yet, so there are no other options. :dunno:

OK then I would keep a close eye on them and your AFR when you spray.

I will be checking them often and I have an on-board wideband display, so I am always eyeballing it when I spray it.
I will probably change them out this weekend and see what the originals look like as well.:specool:

yea, if you want to post some pics of the stock ones after nitrous use and we might be able to help out a little to if you wanted to. then again those ford plugs might be differant then normal ones.

This plug contradicts the cut back plug theory. Look at how the ground bar completely shrouds the electrode. Wow!

yea, no kidding. I am sure 1 step colder will be fine for the shot size he is using them for but I wonder how much nitrous was supposed to be thrown at this plug design. I think Ford was thinking more about getting 100k miles out of the plugs rather then being safe at high hp numbers.
you'll be fine with 100 shot but before you build a completely forged motor for boost and throw these plugs in I would look into their design a bit more... then again, I'm probably just scared with the new and I have been proven wrong before.

been reading this thread for a while and can make up my mind, can we get a couple of more pic's of this plug from diff angle's? one from the end on a little angle and blow it up a little more?
they did'nt have any at the auto store for me to look at. Matt

I was out of state for the weekend. Went to Metroplois IL. for a little casino fun. Didn't lose my butt, but did not profit either.
I will do my best to get some pics soon to post up. As for F/I, there are several people using these with F/I. I personally was involved in installing a Whipple and a Pro-Charger on a couple of the new Mustangs and they have not had an issue with these plugs. They are funky to say the least, but seem to do ok.

Here is a bigger pic. These are not out of mine, but an 05 GT with about 30K who was having some detonation issues due to to much timing in his tune. Oops, where did the attchment go? I'll try again.

I would have to really consider modifying that plug! Talk about shrouding the flame. It could be turned into a cutback plug pretty easily. Probably pick up some free h.p. too.

^ true,
and the good thing about that stock plug is that the ground strap seems thick enough so that it wount turn red and pre-ignite if he does leave it as a single whole strap so he is good there at least.
