View Full Version : Heater Types???

Ok. Another question. There seems to be 2 styles of bottle heaters. One type that heats to a certain temperature using thermostats. The other type heats until a certain bottle pressure requirement is met. The heaters that work on temp instead of pressure (such as Zex) seem to be cheaper than the ones that run on a pressure switch (NX). The pressure sensitive ones seem to be the best logical choice to me, nut I am a newb here. SOOOO........
If the pressures sensitive type is better, is it worth the extra money to the "average" nitrous user (couple shots per week)?
Or, is the temp type as good or better for the money?
And, since I live on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico (Sth AL) where it is warm, is it worth the money at all for either?
Also, any brand preferences (personal opinions here)???
do you have a bottle gauge?

yes, I have a bottle gauge. With a pressure gauge, would it make having the auto style heaters, like pressure switches or thermostats, a moot point?
what's it reading without a heater?

where you live you might want to just use the thermostat style, it will warm the bottle to aprox 85 to 90 deg. which will give you about 925psi, put a blanket on it and your good to go, some of the older unit's warmed a little higher but you'll problebly only use it at nite anyhow, don't forget to wire it with a relay!! and a lite on the dash to let you know it's on,

Go with the heater that uses a pressure switch. You can adjust it to whatever bottle pressure you like and it will maintain that pressure constantly. I recommend the heater kit from ACR, that comes with everything you need. I went through 2 crappy Zex heaters before I found ACR, and haven't had a problem since. I also live in a warm state(FL) and I wouldn't have a NO2 kit without a heater. Maybe on a hot summer day with a3/4 to full bottle you can acheive the pressure you need, but after a run you wont have that pressure anymore. With a heater you will be able to bring the pressure back up rapidly. Plus what are you gonna do at night or during the winter?

Also check the site below. They have the pressure switch heater for less than what the temperature one's go for.

Ok, the need to buy a heater was illustrated to me very well recently. My first trip to the track with nitrous. I thought "meh, April+Alabama = no need for a bottle heater." I was wrong. The freakishly cold weekend temps dropped to the upper 20's. (It was 80 degrees here the previous weekend)Time for a heater....
I am interested in hearing opinions on which brands of heaters that everyone is using and if they are happy. Any and all info is appreciated.
I have thought about the heater from Dynotune. Does anyone have one the the Dynotune heaters installed?

From our experience over the years, the thermostatic type like NOS provides always fail quickly and particularly when you don't need them to. The transducer type like Ny-Trex provides always work as designed once you set them to your desired pressure. Mine is 950 psi or I believe 83*. The Ny-Trex heaters work quickly, just don't touch the band.

Yes, I'm a proud Ny-Trex and NX user! Evidently you haven't had numerous Brand-X fail on you when it counts. And to answer your question, the only thing about that system that doesn't fail is the relay.

gee it's been 2 month's since I posted that, and guess what!! it's still working just fine, NOS is brand X ?, not trying to sell anything here just stating a fact, and the fact is hook it up right and it should work the way it's supposed to, I'm sure your ny-trex or nx work's fine so do my NOS both of them! 5year's running not a single failure!! so go figure.

I'm going to agree with Hammered, as long as you hook everything up correctly as the manufacturer states (if not even ad some safety devices like fuses and relays) most brands are sufficient. Big-name brands like NOS also have to over-engineer their products to live up to their name to keep sales up and so they don't loose their die-hard fans also.
this just poped into my mind, I am not being sarcastic or trying to slam the company or anything, but I am just curious how old the Ny-Trex brand name is? sorry, kind of off topic but I believe its a relavent question to follow my post.

If you're still looking for a good heater try the Nitrous Express Fire & Ice. It's a Peltier device that actually heats and cools the bottle to keep it with a 5 PSI window. JEGS is selling them for $100 less than NX right now but I'm not sure how much longer that price is going to last. Might be worth looking into. Here's some links....
